14 Proven Gardening Tips

1. If you do not have much time for gardening, stick to plants in containers, such as tubs, boxes and baskets. They are easier to feed and tend if you have a busy lifestyle.

2. If you are not sure what you want the layout of your garden to be, plant in pots so you can move plants around until you are happy.

3. If you are buying ready-potted plants of flowers, make sure that they have already begun to flower; otherwise there is a risk that they may never flower at all.

4. These flowering plants are known to survive and thrive in most cities with extremely hot temperatures and high pollution: Madagascar periwinkle, lantana, impatiens, cosmos, cleome (spider flower) and canna (Indian flag).

5. Add compost to your garden soil two to four weeks before you plant. This way, the compost will be integrated within your garden soil.

6. Do not place houseplants in direct sunlight. Even though houseplants need some light, their leaves will wilt if directly exposed to the sun.

7. Make your garden more fragrant by planting more lightly colored or white flowers. You can also give your garden a rich fragrant smell by adding thick-textured flowers such as gardenia, citrus and magnolia, which have very distinctive and intense scents.

8. Water features in the garden should be kept fresh. Install plants like water violet to keep the water oxygenated.

9. Do not plant too many plants in one area. Competition for resources will cause growth of poor-quality plants.

10. Never plant anything under conifers because those particular trees cause the soil to become acidic. Plants around conifers would not grow.

11. Glossy leaves reflect light so it is better to place plants with glossy leaves in shadowy corners to make your garden look bigger. They will thrive there too.

12. Soak eggshells in water overnight and then use the solution as a fertilizer. The solution will be full of nutrients from the eggshells.

13. Use a pitchfork to aerate the lawn regularly. This helps natural drainage and also encourages movement of insects beneath the ground.

14. Open the greenhouse via the door or windows for at least two hours a day. It recycles the air and gets rid of any excess heat.

The basic equipment to work in your garden

Every one who is at heart a gardener loves to potter about the garden with at least one of their gardening supplies in hand. For every gardener the list of gardening supplies varies. There are however a few gardening supplies that are staples for every gardener.

For digging a shovel is the most important tool in your gardening supply list. With a shovel you can dig trees and shrubs up. Perennials can also be transplanted with the aid of your shovel. A spade is another item that works well in gardening supply list. A spade will allow you to work in small areas like a well established garden. Another type of spade that you can use in your supply list is that of the spading fork. This tool will let you dig into hard soil and open the ground up for planting.

For cultivating the ground a hoe is a vital tool. The hoe will dig those hard to get weeds out for you. While a mattock on the other hand will let you dig around trees and shrubbery. Both of these are essential gardening supply items.

For prying rocks out of your garden, be they big or medium sized, a prying bar is very good. This gardening tool will let you get those rocks out of your newly tilled bed without straining your back.

Backaches can be part of your gardening routine if you're lugging mulch, compost or even dirt around in your garden. The answer to this is to have a wheelbarrow in your gardening supply. You must however get a wheel barrow that will do the job well or you will be picking up that dirt from the ground.

For creating beautiful fertile gardens good quality mulch, nutrient added compost and good dirt or soil is something that every garden needs. To give vegetables and herbs that added zing you should spread the mulch and the compost around the base of plants. This is of course where your wheel barrow garden cart comes in handy.

With all these tools at your disposal you might think that your gardening supply is complete. There is one more item that you need to add as it is very important. That is a watering system for your garden. You can use long nozzled watering cans to give your delicate seedlings a gentle flow of water, or you can use a garden hose where you adjust the nozzle head to give different settings allows you to water just about anything and anybody.

As you can see having a gardening supply that is varied will let you choose the right tool for your gardening needs. These items do not have to be of the expensive variety, they should just last for quite a long time, longer even than your perennials!

Water Garden Feature - How To Save On The Pennies And Labour

A Water Garden Feature without doubt is the cherry on the cake giving the ultimate finish to enhance the beauty of a garden or patio - but unfortunately some gardeners are put off because of the work involved with the installation and maintenance of having a water feature. Cost can also hamper the decision of adding a water garden in your courtyard etc.

Expense may not be an issue if you decide on doing the work your self. If you have a good manual at your side when you take on the task then that is the first step in the right direction - follow the instructions accordingly and all should be okay. By chance if you are not DIY minded then you need not worry because Water Garden Features come in all different shapes and sizes thus cutting costs to meet your budget - where you can have an expert fit the fixture.

Small water garden features not only will save on the pennies but will save on the labour also when it comes to the cleaning. And with what you save you can buy different garden novelties.
Combining a fish pond with a water garden has to be carefully planned if plants like the lotus and lily are used; you need to have access to these. Your water garden needs to be approx 16 to 18 inches deep. This is good depth for plants to flourish. Young plants are not dependant on deep water.
How you ornate your water garden feature is entirely up to you but we do not want is to over do it, to much can spoil the appearance.

Water Gardens that host too many plants and shrubs can lose the effect of what you want to inject from the whole project and that is beauty. Shelving is best kept to a minimum if the feature is small - plants can be elevated on to rocks. Shelving is a good idea - it keeps the fish happy providing them with cover from the rays of the hot sun.

Nature comes to the fore from your Water Garden Feature with uninvited guests - what you have to remember water will always attract aquatic life and also children so be careful. Frogs toads and newts will enjoy your water garden feature just as much as you, if not more - so be prepared. There will be the upkeep of the pond/waterfall you have installed - the work involved with the maintenance will not be heavy work if you keep on top.

Installing a water garden feature is not a complicated mission unless you make it one by not having the right tools for the job. Be sure to obtain a good book with details on how to erect and to find the best place to locate the feature. Also do some research on what flowers and plants are suitable? How to clean and maintain a water garden are all important issues you need to know about and last but not least find out what you have to do to meet with the fishes needs and requirements if there is to be any marine life in your pond or pool.

Safety Tip - When next at the garden store purchase your self some netting or mesh so that the Water Garden Feature can be covered in your absence. This is a safety measure for when - CHILDREN ARE AROUND AND YOU ARE NOT.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Readers of John Berendt's bestselling novel were bound to be at least somewhat disappointed by this big-screen adaptation, but despite mixed reaction from critics and audiences, there's still plenty to admire about director Clint Eastwood's take on the material. Readers will surely miss the rich atmosphere and societal detail that Berendt brought to his "Savannah story," and the movie can only scratch the surface of Georgian history, tradition, and wealthy decadence underlying Berendt's fact-based murder mystery. Still, Eastwood maintains an assured focus on the wonderful eccentrics of Savannah, most notably a gay Savannah antiques dealer (superbly played by Kevin Spacey), who may or may not have killed his friend and alleged lover (Jude Law). John Cusack plays the Town & Country journalist who arrives in Savannah to find much more than he bargained for--including the city's legendary drag queen Lady Chablis (playing "herself")--and John Lee Hancock's smoothly adapted screenplay succeeds in bringing Berendt's characters vividly to life with plenty of flavorful dialogue. In similar fashion to Warner's acclaimed DVD of L.A. Confidential, this classy DVD includes a behind-the-scenes documentary titled The Real People in the Garden and an interactive map tour of Savannah and its most celebrated (or notorious) citizens. The original theatrical trailer is also included. --Jeff Shannon

Savvy Gardeners Use Mulch To Make Garden Work Easier

Mulch provides many benefits to plants and soil: insulation, shade, moisture retention, weed reduction, and soil building. But when mulch is applied at the wrong time or in the wrong form, it can do more harm than good. Use the following guidelines to get the greatest benefit from your mulching effort.

First, make the most of your garden space, moisture, and organic matter (including mulch) by planting wide rows - a width that you can comfortably reach across, rather the width of a single plant. Wide row planting reduces the number of paths needed through your garden, and keeps more of the soil surface covered. This results in fewer weeds and better moisture retention, so your mulch can be applied where it is really needed.

~~Finished Compost Mulch~~
There is no bad time to add finished compost to the soil, but for maximum value from this black gold the best time is shortly after spring shoots and seedlings have gotten established and have their true leaves. Apply a layer of finished compost mulch. Often called a top dressing, this layer will merge with the topsoil quickly, but try to keep the compost from touching the plant stems anyway.

How thickly you layer the finished compost mulch depends on how much you have available and how much ground you have to cover. Even a thin layer is beneficial; it provides nutrients that gradually work their way down, and gives some protection against weeds, temperature extremes, hard rain, and so forth.

~~Partially Composted Material~~
Half-finished compost or compost that is noticeably fibrous is never good for mulching plants, or even for adding to the soil near growing plants. Separate additions of partially composted material from planting by at least two or three weeks. The best time to add this kind of compost is in October or November in ground that will be allowed to rest.

Soil bacteria will break down the material, but these organisms have to use nitrogen in order to do their work. Eventually, the microbes will release the nitrogen and make it available to plants again, but in the meantime, the half-finished compost has the effect of starving rather than feeding any growing plants.

~~Hay and Straw~~
Apply a layer of straw or hay once plants are beyond seedling stage. The timing also depends on soil temperature. Since this mulch forms an insulating layer, wait until the soil is warm; else the layer of mulch will insulate in the wrong way-preventing the soil from warming up.

In addition to the straw or hay forming an insulating layer and helping retain moisture, the mulch becomes a nice resting place for melons and squash.

Straw is more carbonaceous than hay, and will break down more slowly. Hay often has a moisture content, and will break down faster. Both are good mulches, but if slugs and snails are a problem, straw is better. Again, keep the mulch back from touching the plant stems.

~~Leaves and Grass Clippings~~
I prefer to compost leaves and grass rather than use them as mulch. Leaves are generally acidic, and affect the ph of the soil. However, some plants such as raspberries prefer slightly acidic soil, and for plants that don't like an acid ph, an amendment of lime could help neutralize the effect of the leaves.

Grass clippings can be very effective mulch - especially for moisture retention, but keep an eye on it. Grass packs down, preventing air circulation so that anaerobic decay occurs. Again, I prefer to compost grass; turning the compost keeps it aerated.

WaterWise Gardening - The Basics Required to Create a WaterWise Garden

Even with water restrictions in place, it is still possible to create an attractive garden without using copious amounts of water.

Soil preparation and mulch are essential in a waterwise garden. A good mulch has many advantages, including;

- adding valuable nutrients and humus to the soil as it breaks down,

- keeping the soil temperature uniform,

- reducing surface evaporation by 70-80 per cent,

- allowing for deep and infrequent watering,

- encouraging earthworm activity, which creates channels for the passage of water and roots, and

- eliminating stress in shallow rooted plants and suppressing weeds.

Compost and horse, sheep and cow manures are excellent for improving soil quality. Pea straw, lucerne, compost, leaf litter and chopped bark all make superb mulches.

The method used to deliver water to plants is very important in getting the most benefit out of the water used. Conventional sprinklers deliver large amounts of water to large areas and can be extremely wasteful if not positioned thoughtfully. The most effective waterwise watering systems use in-line drippers, weeping hoses and drip tubes. These products are designed for placing under mulch and work best at low pressure, where water is delivered over a period of several hours, directly to the plant's roots. In-line drippers are also suitable for lawns.

Grouping plants with similar water requirements will assist in preventing over and under watering. Computerised watering systems allow for the delivery of a set amount of water at specified times, to various sections of the garden. Tap timers are a useful and cheap alternative. Using phosphate and petrochemical free, biodegradable laundry powders allows you to safely reuse the laundry water on the garden.

There are 100s of water wise plants. You can select from Australian natives or exotic plants that come from areas of the world with Mediterranean climate conditions (these are areas that experience hot, dry summers with the majority of rain falling in winter). Plant labels often state how much water a plant needs. If you are not sure, look for plant characteristics such as thick leathery, hairy, wax-coated, succulent, silvery grey or fine needle-like leaves. Other sources of information for suitable water wise plant material are old neglected gardens, holiday homes and streetscapes.

With a bit of planning and some basic knowledge you too can have a water wise garden.

Choosing A Garden Fence

Garden fencing can serve many purposes, but one of the best is to accent and define areas of your garden. Whether you choose a six or twelve inch high border edging, or stand a section of post and rail garden fencing in the center of a sweep of lawn, garden fencing can add a beautiful accent to your landscaping.

Wood lattice makes attractive garden fencing that affords some privacy while allowing glimpses of the garden. Lattice boards set into a wooden privacy fence add a whole new design dimension to the frontage of your garden. A single width of lattice fencing can provide a screen or windbreak, and support for any climbing vines.

Set a lattice panel at the edge of the garden nearest the house and train morning glories to climb it to provide a scenery wall outside a kitchen or bedroom window, or create a simple arbor with two full height lattice panels set six to eight feet apart. Use thick garden twine to create a 'bridge' for vines to climb across and form a living 'roof'.

Border edging is another extremely versatile garden fencing option. Think outside the perimeter. You can use wire garden fencing to create smaller accents within a garden plot, or outline one corner or end of a garden with cast iron border edging.

Cedar shakes or redwood blocks can be used to create curved borders for slightly raised garden beds, or serve as a backdrop over which to spill indigo lobelia or white alyssum. Create a zigzag border of decorative low picket garden fencing and plant zinnias or marigolds in the V-shaped 'teeth' for a unique look.

Garden fencing can be used to create a beautiful background for patio dining. Choose a metal trellis and install it just off the patio edge behind the table and dining set. Twine climbing roses up over it to create an accent that defines the edge of the patio and creates an elegant, tasteful accent to your patio and garden at the same time.

Wrought-iron or cast-iron fences tend to be ornate, which suits more formal, historic houses, such as Victorians, or high-end urban homes. Today, similar styles are available in powder-coated steel, anodized aluminum or composite materials that are much more affordable and easier to maintain.

Stone fences, which are the oldest known type of fencing, make great garden walls or boundary markers around traditional homes, such as Colonials and Cape Cods, when built with native stone. Dry-stacked walls stay together with the help of gravity and friction.

The picket fence, a low, decorative style used to define property rather than secure it, is a universally popular style flexible enough to work with almost any home. There are many variations on the picket fence, including the Federal style, which features scalloped pickets and decorative finials.

Getting Started With Indoor Gardening

When the weather prevents you from going outside to enjoy some gardening, it's just as beneficial and effective to do some indoor gardening instead. In this way, you can indulge in some gardening all year round, while still keeping warm and dry. Better yet, your plants also keep warm and out of harms way from frosts, slugs and deer! By the end of reading this article, you will have many indoor gardening ideas and tips that will have you well on your way to growing lots of wonderful indoor plants and flowers.

Indoor gardening will allow you to have much more flexibility when growing certain types of plants that need a specific temperature. For example, you could grow whatever vegetables you feel like all year round, and not have to wait until they are in season to enjoy their benefits. It also allows you to grow them organically to your own personal requirements.

Many people decide to grow plants in a greenhouse, as this is a form of indoor gardening, and perhaps the most popular. The temperature within the greenhouse is controlled by you, and can be adjusted to suit all kinds of plants. They are made out of either glass or plastic material, and can be bought or made in many different sizes. They are a tried and tested method of indoor gardening, as many professional and amateur gardeners use them, so you are safe in the knowledge that they are suitable for all purposes.

If your budget doesn't stretch to buying a greenhouse, there are many different indoor gardening ideas that are a lot simpler and cheaper, such as just having some pots in a warm area, perhaps in a conservatory or on a sunny windowsill. However, you will have to bear in mind the type of plants that you wish to grow, as you may need a lot of space! If you don't have a lot of space, there are several plants that can be grown indoors in a smaller space, such as cherry tomatoes. They don't require a large pot, as they don't grow too big.

The room that you choose to grow your plants in should be warm and receive a lot of sunlight. You will have to ensure that there is enough heat and sun for the specific plants that you wish to grow, perhaps speak to someone at your local garden centre and they should be able to advise you on some indoor gardening ideas and on what conditions your plants need.

Another indoor gardening idea is that you may wish to place your plants at different places around your house, so you benefit from colours and well-oxygenated air throughout the house. However, when growing plants like this, you have to ensure that they will constantly have enough light, warmth and humidity.

If you wish to get started straight away, it is a good idea to buy an indoor gardening kit from a garden centre, which will give you all the equipment and instructions that you need to begin. It will also allow you to choose exactly what type of garden you want in your house. You should also consider the difficulty of each kit, and choose one specifically designed for beginners to indoor gardening.

It is also worthwhile to bear in mind that if young children or animals can access the plants, it could be dangerous for both them and the plants! If either children or animals tries to eat your plants, it could seriously harm them depending on the type of plant. It could also kill your plant. If it's difficult for you to place your plants out of reach of children and animals, then perhaps research plants that are not dangerous at all, as this could be a solution. However, again, I advise you to talk to someone at your local garden centre.
